img74.gif Database and Knowledge Management Systems

The objective of the first coordinating project is to develop a large scale distributed information and knowledge management system that constitutes the base component of intelligent distributed integrated information architecture.  The project consists of three sub projects each performing research on (1) integration of large scale distributed information and development of large scale distributed multi-DBMS for managing the integrated information, (2) efficient storage and management of large scale data and discovery of knowledge and new information that are useful for human activities and (3) information and knowledge representation languages for efficient integration of the research results on the distributed multi-DBMS and information and knowledge management.

The objective of the second coordinating project is to develop intelligent agent technologies for intelligent distributed integrated information architecture.  The project consists of three sub projects each performing research on (1) agent task decomposition/integration and agent communication protocols focusing on multi-agent coordination that promotes cooperation and settles competition among multiple agents (2) user interface agent techniques helping users use distributed integrated information agent systems efficiently, and (3) application of artificial intelligence techniques to information agents.

img74.gif Natural Language Information Architecture

The objective of the third coordinating project is to develop technology for handling multilingual information in the same information space through structuring, packaging, and converting information to knowledge, and to develop information annotation system to facilitate this technology.  The project consists of three sub projects each performing research on (1) multi-lingual information retrieval and processing in the context of distributed information servers that exchange information with one another by predefined protocols, (2) information annotation systems that accommodate the characteristics of the Korean language and that are capable of expressing users' specific requirements without restricting their own ideas, (3) improving natural language query interface by providing capabilities of retrieval, exchange, and presentation of multi-lingual information.

 

 

 

 

img74.gif Network and Multimedia Telepresence

The objective of the fourth coordinating project is to develop a large scale distributed telepresence system needed for information providing services and user interfaces in intelligent distributed integrated information architecture.  The project consists of three sub projects each performing research on (1) the development of a large scale distributed multimedia system integrating large scale distributed information and providing multimedia services for the integrated information, (2) an advanced security media network providing efficient services and interoperability, and (3) the development of an information security system protecting information against external attacks and providing safe services.

The following programs are available at the center for education and training for expert human resources in the IT area.  For M.S. and Ph.D. students, we (1) offer courses in the IT area, and (2) produce high-quality human resources through the M.S. and Ph.D. programs in the institutes of participating professors. For other trainees, we (1) transfer advanced IT technologies through workshops, (2) offer short-term courses in the IT area for industry employees, and (3) promote technical exchanges through Expert Research Activities Groups.

The Center promotes cooperation with industry through development of commercial quality software systems and technologies.  In addition, The Center (1) performs sponsored research projects from industry, (2) train employees of companies, (3) organize and manage consortiums for technology transfer and distribution of commercial-quality software systems developed.

The Center is actively seeking collaboration with established foreign research institutes. Example activities planned are (1) inviting and exchanging research staffs, (2) mutual consulting in the aspect of system development, (3) promoting joint projects, and (4) co-advising Ph.D. students.  The Center organizes or sponsors international seminars and workshops to promote exchanges in technical and human resources.

The Center is equipped with 23 servers and workstations of more than $10,000 each and some 360 PCs to facilitate research.  The Center is planning to continuously reinforce research facilities in the coming years.
